Driving too slowly in the left lane on the highway in Florida could soon land you a ticket.

Senator Mike Bennett from Bradenton recently introduced a bill to fine drivers for going too slowly in the left lane.

Bennett said it's a safety act meant to crack down on road rage.

"Statistics show when they do impede flow of traffic all the sudden you have an increase in incidents of road rage," said Bennett. "People start weaving in and out of traffic and when you start weaving in and out of traffic, and have accidents at 75 to 80 miles-per-hour, bad things seriously happen."

Florida drivers could soon get a ticket for driving too slowly

Shouldn't the first new bill be the one not allowing txt while driving!?

Sadly this is actually mentioned in the driving manual!!!!!!!

But I am glad to hear that...because this is already a law that is not enforced and creates road rage because some of us want to at least reach the speed limit posted! Also in the driving manual is explained clearly that the left lane is for "passing" in case some have doubts.

About time. I am so sick of the rolling roadblock effect.

Wow. I thought it was a law already, and that the law could be enforced. I am really surprised that it isn't. I also thought it was an obvious law. Driving too slowly can cause accidents just like speeding can.

I taught my grandmother to drive quite a few years ago. She had never had the need to drive until my grandfather got sick. While I was teaching her in NE St Pete, she pulled out on to 4th and started creeping along. Completely freaked me out. I was just waiting to be slammed in to. I told her that she can get a ticket for going too slowly and she immediately sped up to the speed limit. I didn't know I was lying to her. I really thought it was true. If more people knew that you can get a ticket for that, we would have fewer accidents even on roads like 19. I think that road is so dangerous because of the combination of drivers going too fast and others going too slow.

I only knew it was illegal on the Howard Frankland, with those Min 40 MPH signs.

I'm certainly hope this will be followed through, I don't mind if people drive slow, but do it in the right lane.

Or if you decide to drive slow in the left lane, when someone (yes me) comes up behind you doing the speed limit, move over into the next lane so I can pass, you can have it right back once I'm gone, I promise. :P

Now if we could just stop people from flying up a lane that's ending and instead wait their turn there wouldn't be a back up in the first place.

But why should I wait my turn? I am more important than you. I deserve special treatment. All of the regular people should wait. Not me!

My complaint with this is that we really already have this law. Why waste time and money instituting one that's so similar?

http://www.floridaonlinedriverschool.com/Traffic_School-Laws_Florida.htm (broken link)

I. No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic. §316.183(5)
II. The minimum speed limit on Interstate and Defense Highways, with at lest 4 lanes, is 40 MPH. §316.183(2)
III. A person, driving at less than the normal speed of traffic, shall drive in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. §316.081(2)

Well then cops need to start enforcing this rule as much as trying to catch up with speedsters. I absolutelly cannot stand people driving in left lane bellow speed limit. Even at the speed limit, if there is space on the right lane, move over, and if you are passing someone, speed up pass and go back to the lane. There is no need to drive 5 miles next to the person you are "passing"
