Can someone give me some insight on this neighborhood? Specifically close to 11th St N and 11th Ave N?

We have found a house that is perfect for our needs--1929 cottage style, loads of light and space, fenced double lot, salt water pool with screened lanai and child safety fence, separate in-law suite and 2 car garage.
My FIL went to view it and says it's perfect for us but the neighborhood...well, it's not the Old NE, but the block around it is gorgeous and surrounding seems to be just fine.
Commute is not an issue as we work from home. School is not an issue.
Family friendly is an issue as is, of course, safety.

My concern is that it's close to MLK and the hospitals and commercial zone though I don't know if that's necessarily so bad.

Thoughts?

That's a cool little neighborhood. I know that I feel safe when I'm back in there--night and day--but that's just me. 9th Street (or MLK, I guess) has its characters, but its seediness is a little overstated and it doesn't really start until about 5th Avenue North. I don't think the hospital will be that big of a problem. They shouldn't normally run emergency vehicles down the neighborhood streets and they usually don't have the sirens on at night, except when approaching major intersections. One positive thing is that you may end up being on the hospital's power grid, which means you'll only lose power in extreme circumstances.

It would be ideal if you could visit it in person, but if you can't, have your father-in-law drive around at nighttime, too, to make sure that the place is quiet at night.

All in all, it's a convenient neighborhood with a lot of beautiful homes. I'd probably go for it.

Thanks for the quick info. We live two blocks away from a hospital right now in NYC and we are well used to the sirens. My concern is the number of crazy people/homeless that hospitals now seem to invite as they check themselves into the E/R for the night. Maybe not such a problem in Florida since it's warm enough to sleep outside all year round? We have some gritty characters outside our hospitals, but they don't venture to our building.
We will be making a trip down ourselves to check out places in late June, but for now it's all research, research, research before we go.
