8. Planning for how I can claim all of my home's existing problems on hurricane damage.

9. Calling all my friends to have them watch the local news as I jump around behind Jim Cantore on the Weather Channel during the storm.

10. Leaving all of my lawn furniture, garbage cans, kids' toys, and other debris in my yard so the 80mph winds can send the stuff flying through the air like funny-looking missiles.

..or maybe it just SEEMS like people plan that kind of stuff.

I moved this to a new thread to keep it about preparations for hurricanes not for debate about whether the hurricane is going to hit Tampa Bay

Propane for grill
Instant coffee
lamp oil
bags of ice
freeze milk and water in jugs
cereal
bread

Also one thing that we used when the power was out for a week for light were the lawn solar lights you use around your yard

It seems as if we might get some type of weather around here, so, either way it's good to prepare. I'll buy a few cheap candles, a good flashlight and water and milk to freeze since I have a 2 year old that drinks milk like it's free.

When stocking up on dry goods, make sure you also make an effort to use up your refrigerated and frozen items now. You can keep the essentials in a cooler with ice (if you can keep what you have from melting and/or get more), but at some point it is use it or lose it time, and it's just not feasible to cook that Sunday roast over the emergency sterno stove. If you are evacuating, empty the freezer before you leave or come home to a horrific mess. If you plan to evacuate, leave now to avoid traffic or plan to camp out in the I-4 median.

I'm building a solar power system for my hydroponic vegetable garden, and the system could have a lot of value should a hurricane hit. It provides 1500 watts of reserve power and can charge up to 125 watts per hour in full sunlight. The panel itself sells for $299 online, and it is connected to an inverter with a battery pack and a pair of standard three-prong AC outlets. The inverter/battery system sells for $400 online, so the total cost is $699. That's quite an expense if you're not planning on using it for more than emergency response, but if you have a need for the extra power it's a pretty awesome system.

For those interested, the inverter/battery system is the Xantrex XPower Powerpack 1500, and the 125w solar panel is an off-brand unit from UL-Solar.
