How bad is it? Does it prevent swimming in the gulf for a large part of the year? Is it on the entire gulf side of Fla. or just some parts?

Trust me, you won't want to be anywhere near it let along swim in it. Your eyes & throat will burn just being near it. The tide doesn't really stay in anyone area, it floats up the coast. After RT passes & all the dead fish are cleaned up, you can swim again..

There is no set season for RT, it just shows up & travels. Sometimes it stays in area for days on end. One of the nastiest odor you'll ever smell

It is an algy (Sp) bloom, you'll know by odor & dead fish, yes it can travel into the bay. Usually, the media does a good job at getting the word out. Hope that helps....

Ohh, ok. Thank you. What do authorities do about it?

How often does this happen? we went once in January on Clearwater Beach and there were a lot of Conchi (sp?) and other "things" I don't have a name for, weird stuff....how long does that last?..........and......(I know 20 questions, sorry) when does the water get warm enough to get in usually? May, June? earlier?

also,

is there a bike trail by any beaches there? I mean one that doesn't bother people walking or traffic? and one you can take small kids in a trailer?
Thank you.

I LOVE the beach, but won't swim the Tampa Bay waters because of all the breakouts of red tide, e-coli, etc.

This is why we want a home with a pool.

The media will normally do a good job covering Red Tide as someone mentioned above. It is a algae in the water that kills the fish and something that comes and goes each year. It can cause breathing issues for people who are around it. Two years ago the red tide we really bad, but the past two has not been as bad.

Hope this helps... If you hear about it on the media, then I would stay out of the ocean until it clears up. :-)

As far as bike trails near the beach.... We like to go to Fort Desoto. They have a large bike / walking trail with a small snack shop and picnic areas.
