I'm planning an eventual move from the DC suburbs to be closer to my parents in Bradenton, and am not sure which area to choose. Most of the job postings I've seen in my field have been split between St. Pete or Sarasota.

My understanding is that both are roughly a 30 minute commute from Bradenton-would you say that's accurate? I will be traveling to check in on a regular basis, and can deal with some traffic, but would really love to get away from DC gridlock type of situation.

At this point, I'm leaning towards St. Pete because I love what I see of the area when I travel to visit, and I have a handful of friends already in the Clearwater area. But I don't know that much about Sarasota at this point. Just thought I'd source for some opinions, since I will be visiting during Christmas and want to do some in-person research.

I'm in my 20s, and looking for an area with some culture-more restaurant/art/shopping kind of thing. My clubbing days are over! Would like to have a slower paced lifestyle, if I hear one more person introduce themselves with some variation of "So, what do you do?", I'll scream. Gotta love DC. But would like some close attractions and beaches (hour or less). Can I find what I'm looking for and still reasonably spend a few days a week with family?

I'd say Sarasota just for the fact that you wouldn't have to pay $2.50 a day to cross the Skyway Bridge to go to work.. But then I'm cheap..

Sarasota is MUCH closer to Bradenton! Plus you don't have to go over the Skyway. I would definitely choose Sarasota if I were you. Sarasota is a beautiful smaller artsy city with big city amenities. You need to really explore when you visit here, I think you will love it! I love St. Pete, too, but Sarasota is my home. If you have specific questions, I will be glad to try to answer them for you.

since you're in your 20's, i'd say St. Pete. From what i've read, Sarasota is geared towards more older people.

She said she wanted more culture/shopping activities, not clubs. For that, Sarasota fits the bill. Plus, we have 3 college and quite a few young people here.
