Winter has it right. There are many websites that cover the hows and whys of sinkholes. Amazing how many states have them. They occur in places I wouldn't suspect to be sinkhole prone.

Crazy stuff for sure. The odds of such an event happening had to be slim.

People do get killed by sinkholes though. In 2010 a sinkhole occurred and killed a family in Canada. Last year in Taipei Taiwan and guy walking down the street got killed when the ground around him collapsed. There are reports of others, Trenton FL, 2011 when a sinkhole opened under a guy drilling a well. His truck fell on top of him as it fell too.

Ya just never know when or where. Wow.

The current story is certainly world news at the moment.

I've also heard that, at this time of year, when farmers are using lots of water from the aquifer to hydrate their crops (strawberries, etc.), agricultural areas like Seffner and Plant City are more prone to sinkholes.

Very sad, very strange. Like something out of the Twilight Zone.

Last year my sister told me about three men walking a job in Taft, Calif. oil companies have been in that area for decades.
One man disappeared, and the other two turned back and he had fallen into a sink hole full of boiling chemicals, according to the other two men. I still have the bookmarked article. There have been other incidents, but there are not always witnesses.

One CNN article I just read said Hillsborough County has the most sinkholes in the U.S. and referred to it as "sinkhole alley." It's due to the soil composition and dissolving limestone. They say sinkholes in Florida seem to be a problem on the west coast from Tampa northward, where limestone content is highest. I think I just narrowed down my real estate search parameters a bit.
