I googled it and came up with this;

Why do many homes in Arizona have AC units on the roof

I've been in buildings that were cooled by swamp coolers-it worked surprisingly well.

Perhaps.....until you factor in the state income tax and license plate fees based on the value of the vehicle. I found that after a few years there, I missed trees and anything that wasn't earth-toned. I am glad the OP is happy to have found their version of Paradise. Being close to San Diego does help.

Swamp coolers are mostly in older homes or manufactures homes and they work alright until Monsoon Season - (roughly July/August) when the humidity rises and then they are useless.
I went over someones house that had a swamp cooler one day during monsoon and it was unbearable. AWFUL.

I think, personally, that I'd rather be in a 30% or less humidity at 115 degrees than at 98% humidity and 95.

Me too, but then here in Florida we NEVER have 98% humidity or 95 degrees. I love the beautiful coastal breezes here. In coastal cities it rarely gets above 92, and of course we have many afternoon rainstorms that can bring it down into the 70s, which even with the wetness of the rain, feels quite good. Plus we have SHADE TREES, unlike the desert areas.

I would never live in Phoenix - we had relatives living there, moved there from midwest thinking their health would improve - it didn't, and they hated it and moved back. Said it was UNGODLY HOT! And this is compared to the muggy midwest summers.

desert:

1. A barren or desolate area, especially:a. A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
b. A region of permanent cold that is largely or entirely devoid of life.
c. An apparently lifeless area of water.

2. An empty or forsaken place; a wasteland: a cultural desert.
3. Archaic A wild, uncultivated, and uninhabited region.
adj.1. Of, relating to, characteristic of, or inhabiting a desert: desert fauna.
2. Barren and uninhabited; desolate: a desert island.

What a difference compared to FL.
