My daughter is interested in attending Hillsborough Community College and staying in their Hawks Landing Apartments at 4010 North Lois Avenue. We're from out of state and know nothing about Tampa. Would you consider this a safe part of town? She also loves the beach and would undoubtedly spend a lot of time there, even if she had to go by herself. She's so excited, and I'm so worried.

The apartments are fine , there is a police station half a block away. That neighborhood drew park is very unsavory, mostly warehouses, some very modest homes sprinkled around, strip joints and xxx stores. The only reason I wouldn't flat out say don't do it is because i would consider those apartments part of the hcc compound, but by no means would I recommend walking around in off hours.
The beach is not really close, I imagine she would have a car, If she is a freshman there is value to living next door to the school in terms of time management, at the same time. If she was my daughter I would consider apartments around the Westshore area and Rocky Point as well. Rocky Point would put her right across the street from the bay and a pseudo beach, She will undoubtedly want to hang out at the beaches on the gulf which are a good 30 min away. HCC location doesnt work if you want to go to the beach every day. I am not even sure where Pinellas CC is but at least that would put you in the right county for the beach.

Tell her to find a roommate and get an apartment south of Kennedy.

Thanks so much for all the feedback. We'll have to do some research and look up some of those other areas.

I would not suggest living at Hawk's Landing. If you need a reason, just go to the Tampa Police Department and pull the records of the amount of police activity there.

My son did some research into Hawk's Landing before he started at HCC. After a few minutes he was convinced it was not a very safe place. I would concur - get the police call records for the place and you'll understand.

OK. Thanks. I'm convinced I don't want her living there. She'll have to come up with a better plan.

Hawks landing is fine. It's right across the street from HCC. Most of the area around is already, or being, bought up by the airport for expansion. The few homes and apts left, are poor, but not really bad. There is really nothing to walk to around there anyway. Collegs kids are going to have to get in their car to find something to do.

FYI, Hawks Landing may be minority only, which your child may qualify for, I don't know.

THe reason I say that, is I work for FD and go there a few times a month, usually for fire alarms or illnesses. When it first opened, the complex was about 50% white. That lasted about year. The complex has been open for about 5 years. I can't remember the last time I seen a Caucasian person there. I have however seen just about every other nationality, and/or race living there. Blacks, Asians, Indians, middle eastern, Latin. Definitely a melting pot!
