How bike friendly is the St. Petersburg area? Do many people use their bikes as a main form of transportation?

Thanks

Kristin

St. Petersburg is very biker friendly in most areas especially downtown. I do frequently see people using their bikes as transportation and being that Florida is very flat, it's definitely doable.

If you have time, you should take a look at the Pinellas Trail, 42 miles of biker bliss :-)

Depends on where you are going. if you can keep mostly to bike paths and back roads you'll do fine however if you have to share the road with traffic it will be a terrifying experience.

Most of the people who use their bikes as a main form of transportation are people who can't afford cars. Stick to the Pinellas Trail for riding your bike, it's just too dangerous to ride on the street.

Downtown has bike lanes - but I agree, Florida in general isn't a safe place for bikers. We have so many fatalities because automobile drivers can be clueless about bikers on the road.

Agreed. Use bike trails, not the 18" or so painted path on the same road as a bunch of maniacs drive on. It is just so risky. I have lived in a lot of places and here ranks in the top three of worst drivers in my experience and that is because we have crazy drivers from the top two places here racing around elderly people who drive 30 in a 50 mile zone.

Most of the people i know who drive bicycles to work do so because they enjoy the experience and the exercise and prefer it to being cooped up in their cars with the rest of the rush hour gang.

I was referring to the the Tampa area. Most people there who have another option know they're better off leaving their bike at home.

...and your trip home during a daily 5 pm thunderstorm in 94 degree weather is a lovely way to unwind at the end of the day....
