Hi everyone - am relocating to South Tampa (near McDill AFB) and am wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a good veterinary practice. I have a 7 y.o. Yorkie who requires ongoing medical care and in some cases, after hours emergency care. That said, I need to find a great practice(s) fairly close to my house. Here is what I found. Would appreciate any feedback or other suggestions:

1) Florida Veterinary Specialists - Busch Lake Blvd
2) Veterinary Medical Center - Henderson Blvd
3) Banfield, The Pet Hospital - North Dale Mabry
4) North Bay Animal & Bird Hospital - West Hillsborough Ave

Thank you in advance for any recommendations you can provide us.

Most of the hospitals you selected are quite a drive from S. Tampa. I used Beach Park Animal Clinic when I lived in S. Tampa.
My SIL used a vet on Gandy.
Gandy Animal Hospital

I've used North Bay animal hospital for my animals. I liked the doctors and the staff there. They are open late a couple of days a week and open on Sat. however, if it is an emergency after hours you will be sent to a clinic on Busch and it is very expensive for emergencies plus I have heard some ppl were not happy with the care at the emergency clinic.

Several ppl on the forum use Murphy's Animal Clinic IIRC

The one thing I can tell you vet care in Tampa is not cheap.

I am in North Tampa and use Dr Andrew Hong, the Wellness Clinic. Does not try to upsell
I do think he also has a place on Dale Mabry. Frankly, I just go to the vet 1 time yearly, for the
shots. Then I do order heartworm and frontline on line. He has no problem with this, as he does the heartworm testing. He does seem like a good vet. I have been to him now twice. He also does not push teeth cleaning if not needed! I just did find the ad. Long Lake Animal Hospital n. Florida ave. You also can do reviews of vets online.

Vet Med on Henderson has been around a long time. I have always heard good things about them. I boarded my cat there once umpteen years ago.

Vet care in Tampa is expensive, I will suggest you ask for opinions on Banfield in the pet/dog forum. They are part of PetSmart.

If your Yorkie has special needs I would go with private practice. I know someone from Tampa who has a yorkie with cancer and she spent 10K on treatment.

Thanks everyone!!! I really appreciate the feedback. Based on what I am reading, I am going to check further into Vet Medical Center and Gandy Animal Hospital. Also appears that Florida Vet Specialists on Busch Blvd is affiliated with a practice in NYC where he has been a patient, NY Vet Specialists - if we needed them. But hopefully we can take care of things more locally.

Cost-wise: His largest medical bills occurred when we lived in NYC - a regular OV cost me $90 - not to mention his emergency visits and trips to CCU) His current vet (about 20 minute drive) is part of a HUGE practice of vets, specialists and surgeons. (office is 52k sq. ft.) He receives excellent care there, but I pay the price. A regular OV is $75 a visit. He is 7 y.o. and his medical bills so far are a little north of $20k. (sadly, he is the product of a puppy mill.) Anyway, not sure what you mean by expensive, but if it is around what I am paing now, I'll take it Also it is important that they have a pharmacy b/c of his ongoing meds and prescription food.

I have to admit, one of my biggest concerns with relocating (anywhere) was finding good vet care for my little guy, but based on the responses i am reading, I think we are going to find someone who will take great care of him. Thank you again everyone!!

Thank you again for responding. I feel a lot better now!

Default Hyde Park Veterinary Clinic

FVS is a emergency clinic! I've beenn

I take my pets (my doggy and 2 cats) to Hyde Park Veterinary Clinic in South Tampa for some time now.

Their staff is super-nice and the doctors are great.

The place never smells bad or like a vet clinic like so many other places I have been to. They also have it down when it comes to appointments, at least in my experience. Your appointment is at 3 so you will be seen at 3 and not at 3:15 ...

They used to have a voucher on their website for a free exam, maybe they have it again, so you can give them a shot and see what you think ...

Hope this helps ...

There is a new Animal Hospital on Dale Mabry, just a couple blocks north of MacDill AFB. I am going to their grand opening right now (Saturday May 16, 2009). Check them out; it would be convenient for you. Also, if you need petsitting or dogwalking services, give me a call! I have been in business for over 5 years and service the South Tampa area (south of Kennedy). (813) 401-7184 Loraine

I would not use North Bay Animal Hospital [mod] consumer complaint [/mod] I ended up having to bring them to Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency 238 East Bearss in Tampa. Being that my two pups are toy breeds I ended up having additional vet bills s.
