Used to be a big deal when United States Presidents visited a city.......

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Barack Obama's visit to Tampa will have an impact on downtown Tampa traffic Tuesday and Wednesday.

The president is flying into MacDill Air Force Base Tuesday night for a briefing the next day at U.S. Central Command.

Officials are advising motorists and downtown workers to be aware that all roads south of Kennedy Boulevard will be affected.

In addition to the streets, downtown businesses and parking garages south of Kennedy will see an impact.

Officials say downtown workers should arrive to work early and be prepared to stay later. Officials also said the Bank of America and Tampa General Hospital garages will be open but will be subjects of security sweeps.

Bay News 9 Real Time traffic reporter Chuck Henson said the Twiggs and Poe garages are good alternatives, as it the Royal parking lot on Tampa Street.

Closures and detours will be posted on message boards throughout downtown.

"Used to be a big deal when United States Presidents visited a city......."

Indeed. Times have changed. I've been watching the Ken Burns series on PBS about the Roosevelts, my specific interest being Teddy. Now THERE was a President! People turned out for him all over the country.

I'm surprised we even know about it. Security is the utmost requirement of a presidential visit.

The key to security is silence.

I hole up in the house when 0 comes to Norfolk, VA (where I live).

We're awash in tunnels and bridges and they CLOSE ALL THE TUNNELS while he is in town. Heaven help you if you get caught in that.

I sat in front of one of our tunnels for 60 minutes, not moving one inch, when I heard on the radio that the tunnels would re-open "soon."

At the 60-minute mark, everyone just started backing up to take "the long way" around and get out of there.

This stinks for my son who works DT and my wife who has to fly out tomorrow. In this day and age, I would think videoconferencing would be the way to go......for security, cost savings and less disruption to the folks.

From my son:

President Obama in Tampa today and tomorrow. Staying in the hotel that is one building away from my work building. Was told from my work that I need to go through checkpoints and vehicle inspections just to get to my garage and work. Also road closures right next to my work. Already see road barriers and fences ready to go.

Perhaps its the area? My mother, back in Nebraska, lives on the road to the "back" entrance to the Offutt AFB. The current president usually goes down the road once a year, maybe once every 2 years. They put blockades in everyone's driveway, no one is allowed to leave about 30 mins before and up to 15 mins after he drives by. But, everyone goes down to the end of their driveways and waves as he drives by. Its been done that way for years.

Hopefully the nut jobs keep their laser pointers in their pockets. If they pull them out this time, they probably won't live long enough to see a judge.

This one happened at TIA:

TIA re-routes air traffic due to man shining laser light pointer
