A Deed is a legal document that shows who owns a building or piece of land. What you need is a lease or rental agreement. You can buy it at Office Depot. Most city utilities dept won't turn on your water unless they see the document. If your family member is named on the Deed then that will help them get their licence renewed. I hope this helps.

I'd strongly advise against providing them with your deed, even a copy of it.

Have one of the utility bills switched into their name, in MD even a cell phone bill would suffice.

Also, based on experience having a friend live with us who eventually burned us for a good amount of money, an informal lease agreement signed between yourself and the other parties involved is worth little to nothing if things go south.

If you have reservations it may be worth having a real estate attorney draft up some lease documents or at the very least draft up something yourself and have all parties sign in the presence of a notary.

Good advice about not giving them your deed...even a copy...my husband and I had financial problems and moved into a home owned by my mother...we paid no rent or even utilities...we still were able to change our addresses...without the deed...look at the list given above...!

If you go online you can probably find a lease agreement template form.
