I currently live in the Austin, TX area and recently received the opportunity to transfer to my employers Tampa office. We will be in the area for about 5 days next week and I was wondering what you would recommend that we do and see. We plan to spend a couple of days looking at rental properties, but the rest of the time, we would like to see what the place is all about. As locals, what do you enjoy doing in the area? Any recommendations regarding restaurants, sights, and other things we should see? We have never been to Tampa, and just want to get a feel for the area, and not just focus on the touristy sights and attractions that everyone already knows about.
I am not going to specifically request information regarding schools and the best areas to live in (because I am sure those questions are asked a lot) but feel free to offer any advice you might have on those subjects as well. We have one child who is heading for the 5th grade. We are currently looking in the Palm Harbor region, but we are open to other suggestions.

Thanks

We're walkers and the walkable areas we like best are:

Downtown St. Pete; have a meal on the patio at Red Mesa Cantina (all meals are great; but weekend brunches are fabulous).

Dunedin; stop for an ice cream at Strachans.

Safety Harbor; eat at Green Springs Bistro

Gulfport (our hometown); sit at Pia's patio for the best Italian fare in the area (always get one of their specials...they really are special). Or get an on-site brewed beer at Peg's Cantina. If you're in Gulfport on a Tuesday, go to the Weekly Fresh Market (9 am till 2 pm); the twice monthly Art Walks are on First Fridays and Third Saturdays (next one is 6/20) from 6 pm till 10pm).

If a beach trip is on your agenda, I'd recommend Pass-a-Grille. Some nice eateries there too, over-looking the water, but their names escape me.

Enjoy your visit!

Are you moving to Tampa or to Palm Harbor?

We really do not know yet... Palm Harbor seems nice from what I have seen online, so we are planning to check it out , but we are also planning to look in Tampa as well. We will both be working in Tampa.

Both jobs will be on North Dale Mabry, just north of Pine Crest Manor Blvd.

Once you have picked out an area to live as a final step i'd recommend doing a couple of rush hour commutes to and from work from the potential living area, logic being you'll be doing this commute twice a day once you move in..

During a brief visit I'd definitely go to the beach in Pass-A-Grille and then plan to eat at the Hurricane at sunset. Viewing the sunset from this venue is just amazing.

Agreed..Eating on that top floor is quite the experience.Only downside is you have to order the food to go from the 1st floor restaurant then take your food upstairs, well worth the effort.

Check out the flamenco show at The Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City...best steak I've ever had in my life. You could cut it with a fork, it was so tender!

I think you'll get tired of the daily commute from Palm Harbor to Tampa, but as far as apartments go, check out Egret's Landing and Providence at Palm Harbor. These are my top picks in PH. I've been in the apartment industry for 10 years, and know what to look for to weed out the BS.
