If we don't pay taxes, then will each employer be required to pay pensions & donate money to fix pot holes? Or are we looking to turn into an Indian reservation? (No offense to Indians, but none of their Casino earnings go to fix their roads!).

TAMPA — Commuters driving down the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway might pass a driverless car in the near future and not even know it, thanks to a federal contract announced Monday.

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson announced Monday that the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority landed $2.4 million in federal funding for a connected vehicle pilot program.

Tampa is one of four cities nationwide, including Ann Arbor, Mich., and New York City, named as part of the program.

The money — the first installment in a three-stage process that could total more than $17 million — will go toward implementing traffic signalization, technology that will synchronize signals to improve traffic flow; improve road safety; and reduce the carbon footprint of Tampa Bay.

"We're bringing transportation into the 21st century," Nelson said. "And oh, by the way, Tampa is at the center of it all."

I agree; with as much sun as we get here, we should all be using solar panels and reduce our electric bills!

None of the current candidates for sure! & Definitely not another one from the Bush dynasty.

Absolutely. But Solyndra managed to pizz away all that solar money. To the tune of what, half a billion?

New pilot program will make Bay area roads safer, smarter, greener
The Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority is heading the pilot project, which is designed to make transportation safer, smarter and greener.

Vehicles, roadside equipment and cell phones will be equipped with technology that will allow a network of communication on the roadways. The network would be able to warn drivers of potential hazards and traffic problems.

THEA was already awarded $2.4 million for the contract. After the planning is complete, the agency could receive an additional $15 million to carry out the project.

The proposed test sites include the reversible express lanes at Twiggs Street, Twiggs Street at the Courthouse, Meridian Avenue, MacDill Air Force Base, and the Channelside District.

The program will take a look at ways to reduce morning back ups, improve pedestrian safety, reduce wrong-way incidents, improve traffic progression, improve bus transit safety and trip times, and reduce incidents of pedestrian or vehicle turning right in front of transit Bus.

"It really holds the potential to reduce fatalities by as much as 80 percent," Rogoff said.

Who will win the battle for supremacy in the connected car market? - M2M Now - News and expert opinions on the M2M industry, machine to machine magazine
Who will win the battle for supremacy in the connected car market?

The automobile industry is gearing to meet new challenges – from making cars semi-autonomous and autonomous to hybrid cars and shared mobility.

Technology is also playing its role in several areas such as in-car connectivity, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) and Telematics.

The Connected Car ecosystem market for embedded connectivity is estimated to reach $40 billion by 2020.

...The benefits for car owners are many. There’s the promise of improved breakdown assistance that can be automatically enabled using vehicle location tracking to save us from the prospect of waiting for hours on the hard shoulders of motorways for a break-down truck to arrive. Poor driving habits can be improved by e-coaching systems that deliver personalised hints and tips to our in-car systems. In-car sensors can also help prevent accidents by alerting us when tyre pressures are too low or other potential safety issues and can even provide vehicle diagnostics that can be transmitted over the cloud to service companies to automatically schedule the car for service. Health and safety levels are also being improved with systems that monitor driver’s vital signs and fatigue levels.

...What’s clear is that there’s huge value at stake and, as with any other technological disruption, we are in for some interesting times. Cars are being redefined as a computer on wheels with software getting into each and every subsystem. The Electronic control units will inevitably become networked and start to communicate with each other as the autonomous systems evolve.

They'd rather the Bush's and Cheney and their Halliburton friends.

But I suppose complaining about the pittance that goes to helping modernize a city where we the people live makes for a good distraction from what's gone to private contractors who profit from the war machine killing people where we don't have to see it.

What are we up to by now, 40 cents of every dollar going to private contractors? How much did Iraq cost the American taxpayer, paid out to private companies alone?

Halliburton $18.5 billion (reconstruction & troop support)
Parsons $5.3 billion (engineering & construction)
DynCorp $1.9 billion (police training)
Transatlantic Traders $5 million (surveillance)
Blackwater $21 million (private security for guard Paul Bremer

And which politicians do these guys contribute to? Let's have a look at one for grins...

But funding a decent traffic system for Tampa citizens? That would be anti-American.

Bankrupt. Cost to taxpayers $ half billion. Don't worry, there's plenty where that came from, isn't there?

Exactly. And here's Nelson with his talking points about bringing transportation into the 21st century. Hey, Senator, here's a thought: maybe it would be a good idea to shore up some of that crumbling infrastructure and bring transportation into the 20th century first.

FEMA told the folks who were flooded out in West Pasco to drop dead. I'm sure they're delighted to hear about about driverless cars. Many have homes that are uninhabitable. But hey, the fat cat consultants will be hoovering up that 2 mil in no time while the homeowners are still wading through much in their living rooms.
