I have heard some nice things about Dunedin and I plan on visiting sometime soon to see for myself. In retirement my main hobbies are painting and taking art classes. Does anyone know much about the art community in the area?

I find Dunedin to be very nice. To me as a non-artist Dunedin and nearby Safety Harbor are both very 'artsy'.

Gulfport is very artsy. Twice a month evening Art Walks, year-round. We checked out Dunedin and Safety Harbor before settling in Gulfport. IMO, Dunedin a tad too old and conservative in demographics; Safety Harbor more family oriented (kids).

We rented a house in all 3 cities (in downtowns) for a month+ before we made our decsion. Recomend you do the same.

Dunedin is a fine retirement town. It's pretty, lots of restaurants and this:

Safety Harbor is charming and close to Clearwater for things to do.

I wasn't a fan of Gulfport, a little too near a not-so-nice area of St. Pete.

But as dothetwist advised, spend a little time in those areas to see what fits your bill best.

We have a winter home there now and spent our first winter there last year. It seems there are art shows downtown happening quite often where they shut the street down. There are lots of little quaint little shops up and down main street. A farmer's/vendor market on the weekends for produce but we found the Wagon Wheel flea market just 25-30mins. south of Dunedin that is huge with everything imaginable that we'd go to every Sat. to get our veggies and produce. They have the Highland Games every winter celebrating Dunedin's heritage of Scotland.

You should come and visit and see if you like the atmosphere.

There is another flea market in Oldsmar, which is east of Dunedin.

Tarpon Springs, 2 towns north of Dunedin is Greek town, restaurants and many other shops.

Thank you all for your opinions. I plan to make a trip to the area in a couple of months. I will make a list of places to check out based on everyone's suggestions.

You can't go wrong in any of the places mentioned above. They all have their own unique vibe as do all the little beach towns that dot the Gulf in Pinellas County.

Do let us know how your trip goes!
