Where I live and work, I swear we have a power outage every other week!! I've never seen anything like this. Someone else told me where they live over here they also experience a lot of power outages. What is the deal? I wish I would have known this before I moved and chose to work over here

Overall the utilities in South Tampa are some of the oldest in the city. The grid and water are being replaced as time goes on, but they are still far behind the newer areas. Couple that with it being denser than most of the rest of the city, and you have a situation where the city is always behind on replacing and upgrading.

I don’t recall it being a big problem when I lived there, but I would guess the issue is above ground lines are less reliable than buried.

I have a friend who works at Teco. He told me the way electricity works is each section of the city gets a certain amount of power depending on population. The dirty little secret is the city gives the South Tampa area 23% more power then its allotment. Yet it still uses more then its share and once its out it has to steal from the other parts of the city. Once again the rich take more then their fair share.

A lot of electrical/power companies are in the process of bury the power cables as that will prevent lots of power outages. You can see the crews all around Tampa Bay working on that. However, the main issue the power companies are running into is private land and some power companies starting to dig without permission which has caused lawsuits.

Once these cables are buried the owners of the land have an issue if they want to do something else with the land due to these cables. Some vacant land owners made huge money once they run into illegal buried cables or the work in process as that is a huge no but the power companies take the risk as some vacant land owners never go to their properties. Once it is in that could be grandfathered in. I’m not a lawyer and can’t comment on the legal expect of this but have heard how millions have been paid for some land to get the cables buried or the county starting to change roads without proper buying of the land or eminent domain.
