I think it all depends as to how OP would define "close to restaurants and shopping."

Eastlake Woodlands, despite not being particularly "walkable," still provides easy access to shopping and dining in the immediate area, and if one wants more of a downtown atmosphere, Dunedin, Safety Harbor, and Tarpon Springs are all close by.

I was in Tarpon Springs last weekend and couldn't believe how run-down it looked. Had not been there in years.

Highly recommend Rusty Bellies, tho.

Dunedin on the other hand has really bloomed!

Dunedin has a sparkling downtown, especially at night when the lights twinkle and the electric lights glow.

What part of Tarpon Springs did you find "run down?"

There are a few small pockets, namely the area between Pinellas Ave and 19 South of Tarpon Ave, but for the most part it's quite nice and clean.

Everything pretty much immediately turns into dookie the second you cross Anclote and enter Pasco. It's two different worlds, literally right across the street from each other.

I live in North Lake area of Tarpon Springs and its very nice comparable to Palm Harbor house wise not school wise though!!! The other night I happened to drive down Tarpon Ave off Alt 19 and I couldn't believe how alive it was with people and restaurants! However I do agree that Dodecanese its a whole different story! Very run down I think it needs a major infusion of money to improve its infrastructure especially from flooding. It really is a shame because it could be a cool place like it was in the late 90's.

Yeah, I don’t really care for the sponge docks and never really have. Their Greek food was super disappointing too.

Tarpon Springs is mixed and a bit rougher than Dunedin or Safety Harbor, but it has a lot of good areas. I like the area along the bayous and by the Gulf. Their downtown isn’t terrible either (not talking about the sponge docks.)

Downtown Tarpon is pretty nice. A bit on the small side of things, and borders a fairly rough[ish] part of town. H'Ours is a pretty solid restaurant if one is looking for good food and live music in a nice setting.

I agree that those areas around the bayous headed to the Gulf are beautiful. I love driving/biking through those neighborhoods while headed to the beaches.

I never really had an issue with the Sponge Docks area... Always felt like a bit of a tourist trap, but with some nice seafood markets with VERY fresh catches at great prices. I love to go there, if only for that, and for a change of scenery on occasion.

Agree that the Greek food isn't impressive, which is a shame considering the area and its heritage. All pretty much reminds me of XYZ you-name-it "Greek" lunch spot (aka Little Greek) that you see all over the place... With generic canned and frozen junk.

East Lake, Ridgemoor, Tarpon Woods, Lansbrook and nearby.

US19 and any place near it is to be avoided at all costs. So putting Lake Tarpon between you and it helps. Every time I have to cross or God-forbid, drive on US19 I swear I am never doing it again.

You can buy the house I am trying to get rid of. The house next door is for sale and you would think there is a Bucs game going on over there with the non-stop stampede of people looking at it all day every day.
