Hi, I also live in Riverview. There is a new meetup group for people in the area where I think you'd be likely to make some new friends. A lot of us in the group are new to the area.

I agree with Meetup.com to find groups you can join who like to do similar things. I have several gay friends and they have never had any problems in Tampa. Once you make friends it will be easier

Default We're relocating and considering Brandon/Riverview

Are you still living in Riverview? My partner and I are considering Brandon-Riverview since the housing is more affordable but we are not sure about the general attitude to gay people in that area! We mostly get the advice to look in South Tampa but it's way more expensive.
Please let us know your experience
Thanks

[quote=lexipapa;9054968]Hi Lee
My name is Doug and my partners name is Joe. We moved to the Brandon Riverview area in Sept 08. Joe is a native to Florida and I'm from the Johnson City Tennessee area where we met 12 years ago.
We are in our mid 40's. We enjoy movies, eating out, etc. Like you and your boyfriend we are not into the bar seen.

Although Jim and I are much older, we found that the Meetup website has lots of gay groups to join. You'll need to join Meetup, but I believe it will be well worth it. On Thursday, a new group of young gay professionals was started in Tampa. There are other Meetups for gay bicyclists, hikers, runners, and social events.

Georgie's closed a while ago. It was such a fun place. However, they closed because business was down due to the fact that the gay-friendly atmosphere has grown so much in St. Pete that there was no reason for a specifically gay bar - gays are welcomed in all the bars now. Downtown St. Pete is very gay friendly, even in locations (very few) where it's not advertised. Downtown St. Pete is alot of fun, especially around Pride. Don't miss our Pride parade/festival, it's one of the best in the country.

Also, gay-friendly people are in the Tampa Bay area, you just have to find them. You will find more of them in urban centers like St. Pete, Tampa, Dunedin, but since you're in Riverview, you are closer to the ignorant redneck "country" people of Hillsborough County. They're not all that way, but more so than the previously mentioned areas. Florida is such a transient place, it's hard to maintain a consistent level of acceptance; however, it's not a terrible place to be in regards to this. I've been to a lot worse areas.
