Hey guys. I will be attending Stetson law school in Gulfport this year and I am moving from CA, so I don't really know the St. Petersburg area. Where would I be able to find a good apartment in a safe area that would have a relatively easy commute to Gulfport? According to apartmentratings.com every apartment in St. Petersburg is terrible. I refuse to believe this...but maybe its true. Also, an apartment near a Staples would be good since my wife will be transferrring to the nearest Staples store. My main concern is safety, so commuting a little longer would be worth it. Also, I have heard good things about Brandenton....would this be feasable or would the bridge be jammed everyday? Thanks.

This post will save you a lot of time:

St. Pete Beach. You will find many annual rentals that are small, clean, safe and affordable. Gulfport itself was supposed to be "up and coming," well, now it's sort of going. Most of the apartment ratings you've read are accurate; living in a complex here is not a good idea. If you live in SPB your commute will be about 10 minutes tops. The SPB police don't screw around and the only nonsense is the occasional drunk tourist/Red Sox fan.

The only bad news is that most of the good rentals are only advertised via 'For Rent' signs in front lawns, so you'll need to be here, driving around, to find them. I rented half a house there for $650 during the height of the bubble, so good deals are possible. You may also want to check out Sunset Beach in Treasure Island. Forget Bradenton, the Skyway can be a nightmare.

If you have a few extra bucks, Pass-a-Grille, totally...
