Woman, 84, attacked by rare bacteria in Gulf, loses leg | Breaking Tampa Bay, Florida and national news and weather from Tampa Bay Online and The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com
I post this NOT because I am against our beaches, but to make people aware that open cuts can propose serious infections in our warm waters. I always thought you take your cuts to the beach to clean 'em out, but I was always on the east coast, where I guess it can also happen, but never heard of it. I always though in the hot summer you stay out of the lakes, the gulf too sigh..

Fresh water poses risks, too. Bacteria and parasites love the heat.

I'm not against our beaches, they're very pretty, but at some point people will wake up to the fact that the Gulf has essentially been turned into a huge toilet bowl, however, for now denial runs deeper than its waters.

The best natural bodies of water to enjoy during the hot summer months are the cold springs and spring-fed rivers (not lakes). I very much enjoyed tubing down the Itchetucknee (sp?) river in North Florida.

So out of millions of people swimming in the gulf an elderly person with most likely a compromised immune system gets an infection, and we need psa's. You are statiscally more likely to have a car accident or choke on on a chicken bone.

One could also take the point of view that this elderly person is sort of a canary in the coal mine.

Trust, but verify.

This sounds like a miniscule problem. On average, 36,000 people die every year from the flu and it's not like the flu is something most people should worry about.

I still think it's a good thing to be aware of. Especially for people who may have compromised immune systems and open cuts, scratches or problem skin.

Time will tell. If there are other incidents, then perhaps there might be something to consider. In the meantime, I appreciate the heads-up, although I've never been a fan of swimming in the Gulf during the summer. Not very refreshing, IMO.
