Is it allowed? Wouldn't teacher be in trouble, even if she/he is paying then? What's a general district policy?

On or off campus?
Right after school, or weekends?

I'm sure most districts have some policy about teacher's children in their classroom after school hours. Ours is that they must be enrolled in the district after school program.

But I don't believe we have a policy against students serving as paid babysitters outside of school hours. In fact my daughter has babysat her teacher's kids, once at school (for an evening function), and at the teacher's home.

Unless the district has a policy against it, I don't think there's anything that would prevent it. As long as there's no favoritism towards the student, I don't think it would be an issue.

As a teacher, I wouldn't hire one of MY students to babysit, but I'd hire a student I didn't have in class.

Not liking it much. But, are there extenuating circumstances? A very poor child from a poor family? A child with almost no family, alone all the time, single Mother?

I will admit to some boundary crossing in my career, things that would raise eyebrows, but it was always based on trying to help out. I went to kid's homes, helped their parents fill out paperwork for Medicaid, lots of things "teachers" don't do...

I think that it may depend on the size of the town. In a small town, with only one high school, the only teenagers around would be in your school or one of your students. In a larger town there would be many more potential babysitters.

If I were a HS teacher I personally wouldn't hire a student from my school due to privacy issues. I wouldn't want them gossiping, "Ms. Smith went on date and didn't get home until 3 AM" or "Mr. Jones has a huge cabinet filled with wine and booze" or "Ms. Jones has a vibrator hidden under her pillow" or "Mr. Smith's children are really wild and out of control" or "Mrs. Moore says that she is on a diet but her refrigerator is filled with fattening food".

I do not believe that most school districts have a specific policy either allowing or forbidding something like that. It is up to the individual teacher to make their own decision on what is appropriate.

Very dependent upon size of community. I grew up in a small town- verysmall -and it was hard to avoid this scenario.

What is the difference in paying to have sitting with anyone elses kids. None. Likely she knows which kids to hire same as hiring a neighborhood kid is better since you know them.

I guess I don't see the problem. We all called our teacher friends to find out who the best babysitters were and I know the teachers used students or former students as well. It's sad that this even has to be a thread...
