I saw the headlines and the response from the child who said that he didn't have any friends. It looked so sad that I originally didn't read it.
I've always worked in low socioeconomic schools and I know that several of the English teachers used the the What I Did Last Summer essay as a way to get to know their students. Some of things the students would write about would shock the shoes off of you or make you cry.
You know, I have a friend who worked in a poor school in a segregated neighborhood and every year, we would go to the local rummage sale and pick out books. She leveled them for her 1st grade students and sent each student home with a book each semester. These children mostly had no books at home except for a Bible and a cookbook. We got a whole box of books at the end of the sale for about $25.00 and often the rummage sale people who knew our story would donate another box or more.
It's a good idea and maybe this teacher can start it up in her classroom. My friend kept the extra books for her classroom library or distributed them to other classrooms who wanted a library of their own. The school library just did not have the resources.
She took her whole class to the local library and they got library cards, but most did not use them because their parents could not take them and they were not safe walking alone through the neighborhood.
