Due to the CA budget crisis, thousands of teachers in that State are facing layoffs. The group that is facing the greatest threat is English Teachers. The powers that be in the State have decided that the limited resources are going to be directed at Science and Math instruction. While these subjects are important, I feel that the ability to read and write is far more important for the average person than knowing advanced chemistry or calculus. Do you agree?

Judging from the galloping illiteracy and general lack of ability in the spelling and sentence structure departments here on the 'net, I would recommend they just drop English entirely and let our empire continue its downward spiral.

BTW, isn't "California budget crisis" kind of repetitive?

The problem is that teachers in California get paid too much, also there is no difference in pay between a Math teacher and an English teacher. The uniform pay scale completely ignores the job market, namely that that the supply of English teachers at X wage is way higher than the supply of Math teachers at X wage.

Anyhow, Math and Science are more important. The US is not going to be able to compete with other Countries soon if it doesn't improve its Math and Science education. It should also be noted that they spend very little time teaching writing in high school, you are primarily reading various literature. Its unclear how knowing about such and such story is more useful than Math/Science which is used to make everything around us.

Default English TA

Yes, Math and Science are important but you need to be able to read and comprehend the directions, applications ect to actually to the work. The main reason you read these stories is because you are learning to think outside the box. You learn a lot of skills to help you in other subjects. All of these subjects are important.

Because it has been shown time and time again that being able to read improves thinking, logic and reasoning skills. People who read tend to make better decisions. Ever notice how someone who is described as 'well read' generally wears their pants around their waist, and not below their behind?

Well, isn't Spanish the first language of California? Maybe the English teachers can get hired back on teaching ESL.

Kids can read before they get to high school. Reading in today's society is important, but spending 4 years reading such and such literature in high school seems to do very little.

Its unclear how reading literature is going to improve ones ability to reason. If you want to improve kids ability to reason then more classes should be taught in logic, abstract mathematics and scientific methodology. These subjects deal directly with the subject unlike literature.

No, teachers in the humanities and arts are paid too much. The starting pay is fairly modest, but the pay goes up a lot after a few years. After working for a few years you can get paid 50k a year for 8 months of work. Before retiring (after 15 years) my mom was getting paid about 65k for 8 months of work.....easy work at that.

Get rid of the unions and you'll see what the market really thinks of teacher's pay.

Maybe.

If you really understood the sheer amount of first generation Spanish speaking children going through the California public school system then you may have a different opinion.

These kids are taught ESL anyways.
