We are finishing off the year with less pay. My remaining paychecks will be reduced .5% of my total year salary. The estimate is that I will have about $80 taken from each check. Yes, they are taking away money I've already earned and money I was contracted to earn. Considering NC pays teachers SO little it's a big hit. I'm at the 5 year step and am only making 34k.

In return the state says I can take off 10 hours which of course I will not be able to do unless I want to pay $50 a day for a sub.

My school system is also doing some SERIOUS staff reductions, 11 positions at my school alone are being cut. They are also freezing all positions of teachers who are leaving. This is huge considering my school already has 30 kids in most classes, what will be do have 50 in a class next year. Oh and our enrollement is of course UP not down.

I've also heard on the news that the state is looking at 20-50 DAY furloughs for the next fiscal year starting in July. GREAT!

That has slowed down some and I've heard that there have been some layoffs in some sectors of employment, but for the most part "business is still booming" here. My raise for next year is about 8.8%. That includes a $1200 step increase and the rest is COLA. I'm VERY happy with that. I moved from MT to WY this year and my take home pay literally doubled. Part of that is due to a lot lower taxes here. But in any case, my gross salary increased almost $20K. I'm not bragging, just saying how fortunate I feel we are here when others are losing jobs or taking pay cuts. BTW, our benefits package is almost $20K.
I'm jealous. My raise for next year is $0.00 and no COLA either. We're told we should be glad to just have a job.

Wow. Things sound bad there.

How would furloughs work? Wouldn't they have to hire a sub?

I am wondering the same thing. Why do you have to pay for your own sub? They only make $50 a day?

I wouldn't put in one more minute than I had to. Show up at your required report time and leave as soon as your contract time allows. What doesn't get done, doesn't get done. "Work to the rule" is what we have called it in the past.

If I did that, I wouldn't get anything done. I'm a first year teacher and lucky if I'm done after 12 hours a day.

I don't have to pay my subs but it costs me $50/day to take a day off because we get a bonus of $50/day at the end of the year for unused PTO days. Maybe she has something like that.

Oh well, that's the point. You can't get done what you need to get done in the time they pay you for and they are cutting your pay. We have done this in the past. You do just enough to be ready for the next day and say "Oh well. Too bad" about the rest. Of course, you wouldn't want to be the only one doing this. Our local union and association organized the "work to the rule" action. We all met before school, walked in together, and then met at the end of the day and all left at the same time.

I feel bad for the kids in your district. They don't deserve this.
