I have been doing extensive research on the Clarksville area, and am torn as to moving there. What interested us in that area is Ft. Campbell. My husband is a vet and needs medical care, the closer we are the better. Also, a descent public hospital is also important. Secondly, Clarksville isn't that far away from some great fishing spots-that's what my semi-retired husband is looking for. Seems like Clarksville had a little of "everything" we wanted and have been in search of. I decided to read some of the threads on here and now I am concerned. Maybe Clarksville isn't the best choice for my family.
We want to be in a smaller community, living on atleast 20 acres in the country. I'd like descent schools for my daughter, and friendly, but NOT noisy people where EVERYONE knows EVERYTHING about you. I work in Law Enforcement, so I can work just about anywhere. My husband is semi retired, and a part time truck driver (making us "middle class" I think). We are both looking to go back to school to pursue other intrests. We are both Vets (Army & Air Force) and for ONCE in our lives, we are weighing heavily on our options as we want this to be the LAST time we move!! It's time for this family to grow some roots!
Our other concern is the cold winter. We are in search of a warmer, more humid climate with a "mild" winter. Considering we live currently at 8,500 ft in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, "mild" winter can mean a lot to us. Right now, we live with about 6-8 months of (deep) snow a year!
To cut to the chase, here are my questions, if anyone has any input, I welcome all information you may have to give!

1) What are the winters like in TN? Is the humidity a major factor in how "cold it seems"?

2) What small town(s), within 60 miles East, South and/or West would have the best for schools and recreation-keeping "mild winter" in mind, if that makes a difference.

3) I have heard the Waverly area is far more better than Clarksville area...any thoughts on that? I have found TONS of affordable property in Humphrey's County.

4) I HATE tornados, but have lived with sirens going off before. How often does that occur in that area? I can live with it "mildly", but I don't want to unknowingly move to the "tornado alley" of TN.

Thanks for looking and posting when you get the chance!

When you say vets are you retired or do you go to the VA? That will make a difference.

Since you have been in CO, the winters may be alot different for you. The only thing I hate about the winters there is the wind chill.

2) What small town(s), within 60 miles East, South and/or West would have the best for schools and recreation-keeping "mild winter" in mind, if that makes a difference.
Check out the website Great Schools. It has some awesome information on schools.

Clarksville has grown alot over the years. I personally like Goodlettesville (in Sumner Co), Greenbrier areas.

I think a friend of mine can honestly say its nothing compared to Oklahoma City. You cant really classify one town being more of a tornado alley than another. Its really touch and go.

Clarksville is my hometown. While I like it, each time I go home it feels like its getting bigger and bigger. Then again, I may be moving back here in the next couple of months.

My husband is both retired and goes to the VA. If we get our healthcare on base, it is completely free.

We like the small towns, being closer to medical care is a huge priority for us. We would like to visit Nashville, but we don't want to be that close to it and have to deal with the traffic or the people.

What about Springfield? It's just that much closer to Clarksville.

Thanks for your posting!
