We are planning on coming to the Smoky Mountains October 11-18 and was wondering what the color is looking like?

Thanks
Jasper Hobbs

I was in Smokies on Oct 1st & no significant color then. However we had two cold nights after that and cold tends to trigger the tree color changes. Since the cold nights all the dogwood trees around my place are starting to turn red so it shouldn't be much longer.

Colors are coming in in the Smokies in the highest elevations at the moment and the first leaves are beginning to change lower down as well on the ivy vines and a few trees, usually a harbinger of full color changes. I suspect places like the higher parts of the Cherohala Skyway, Mount LeConte and Clingman's Dome will begin being really pretty in about a week to 10 days and after that it will descend and be close to peak by the last week of October, at the latest early November, for the lower mountains. If we have enough moisture and no little heat waves the trees often will keep their colors for longer, well into November.

It won't be at it's peak for the OP's dates but there will be a good amount of color near the tops of many mountains and beginnings of color closer to the valleys. Hope you enjoy the trip Jasper!

Here's the most current report dated October 4. Every week that report will be updated. The report breaks up the state so no matter where you are going in Tennessee, you will know what to expect.

Fall Foliage Info : Fall in Tennessee 2010

My opinion is you will do better closer to the 18th.
