My husband and I are planning a trip to Georgia and Tennassee and wondered what the best time of year to visit would be.

So far our plan looks like this.....
Fly to Atlanta - Nashville - Memphis - Vicksburg - Natchez - New Orleans - Ft Walton beach - Tallahassee - savannah - Charleston - Atlanta.

We think we might spend about 15 - 20 days and will share the driving.
Does anyone have any advice / places we should visit whilst we are there ?

We are just trying to see as much of the US in our 2 years here. Any advice appreciated !!

Mid to late October is the best time to tour the Smoky Mountains.

I'll agree with April/May for the views as there will be all kinds of trees and flowers in bloom then.
Sept/Oct is okay weather wise, but in the areas of the south you'll be visiting there isn't really the kind of spectacular fall foliage you find further north at that time of year.

You don't mention what kinds of things interest you so I'll toss
out some random ideas.

Memphis~
Ride down the Missippi or have dinner on a riverboat
Visit Memphis Botanic Garden (http://www.memphisbotanicgarden.com/index.cfm?section=4&page=76 - broken link) (the rose gardens is especially nice)
Visit Graceland Mansion- Elvis Presley
If music interest you visit Sun Studio. The Birthplace of Rock N' Roll . and Gibson Guitar

Mobile~
You didn't mention Mobile but you'll probably be going right through on your way from New Orleans to Florida, so...
Tour the USS ALABAMA battleship, submarine and museums
Bayou La Batre Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet in May

Tallahassee~
Wakulla Springs State Park ride a glass bottom boat in water so clear it looks like it came from your faucet.

i believe that middle october is one of the most beautiful times throughout the state. about the second week of april the bright greens of spring begin to appear. the dews become heavy, generally many heavy rains, and many of the decidious trees begin to flower or bloom. the brilliant greens give much depth, and that is a good time to drive from one end of the state to the other, in order to see the wild flowers and trees and grasses.

I love going to The Smokies in April but it doesn't look like they are going there.
