A recent study on the effects of retirement migration in the US conducted by the University of North Carolina at Asheville has found that Tennessee is a popular choice.

Tennessee is number 8 in the country for retirees moving in. The top 10 are:

1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Arizona
4. California
5. Georgia
6. North Carolina
7. Pennsylvania
8. Tennessee
9. Washington
10. New York

However, when you deduct the number of retirees who move OUT of the state from the number moving IN, the resulting ranking of the net increase changes:

1. Florida
2. Arizona
3. Texas
4. Tennessee
5. Georgia
6. North Carolina
7. South Carolina
8. Arkansas
9. Washington
10. Oregon

I was a bit surprised when I saw it. I guess the secret's out! No wonder that 7,000-home "green" retirement community is being built in Cumberland County.

The study can be found here (it's a PDF file):

I didn't see his methodology. I'm curious as to why they think everyone over 60 who moves is retired and why retirees who are under 60, and move, are not counted. I'm also wondering if woman over 60 who move with their formerly working spouses, but who never worked outside the home themseves, are counted as retirees. In other words, I don't know why they don't just call these kinds of migration studies "People Over 60 That Move." Could it be because they are in the retirement business?

But, this guy isn't the only one who does that.

I don't see how Florida can be #1 on both lists. Recently there was an article in the local paper in South Florida where they had polled all the moving companies and they were moving more people OUT of Florida than they were IN.

Yeah I've heard that, too. However, maybe that's just moving companies for SOUTH Florida. My friends in North Florida tell me that things are still booming there, particularly in the Panhandle. I don't have any statistics to back that up, however.
