This new law is causing all kinds of problems. They also charged this 86-year-old veteran for a photo ID card. WWII Vet, 86, Charged $8 for 'Free' Photo ID | Humphrey on the Hill | knoxnews.com

Both cases happened about a month ago. Let's hope they've worked the kinks out but I'm not holding my breath.

Actually, this is a different law, which makes the entire thing more scary.

The state Legislature passed a law this spring requiring voters to show a photo ID in order to cast a ballot. It included the requirement that any Tennessee resident who didn't have a photo ID could get one free of charge.

I read it as part of the same mess....

"In January 2008, the Department of Homeland Security has issued a final rule to establish minimum standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards in accordance with the REAL ID Act of 2005"

Technically it is not and that's what I find scary. If they are having this many problems with giving free photo IDs for voters at the DMV can you imagine what kind of mess the starred IDs are going to incur?

There is a lot of controversy over voter fraud. Identity theft is a problem that is largely ignored.
As it is in TN one can get a voter registration by filling out an application and mailing it in without any documentation. They just take your word that you are who you are, your are not a felon, you are a citizen, you are a resident of TN. To actually vote, all you need to do is tell them your name and show just about anything. A electric bill with your address on it will do. I could use my neighbors address and get a copy of their utility bill. They have no way to know if it is you. A photo ID is simple. Most ppl have them for ID purposes. They are easy to obtain. Its painless to show an ID and it will verify who you are. This reduces voter fraud as well as making it easier for the polling volunteers. I just dont see the big paranoia surrounding this.

Sure they had a few kinks, as with charging that man. Im sure there will be a few more bumps before it begins running smoothly. Thats the way it always goes.

Yea I dont understand why anyone- liberal or conservative, would have any problem with showing a photo ID to vote. We are taking nobody's right to vote away, we are not costing anyone (except the isolated cases that will get worked out) anything to vote, and we are not discriminating against anyone.

If the right to vote is not worth getting a photo ID for you, sorry. The risk of voter fraud far outweigh's a few people's not wanting to go through the effort of getting a photo ID.
