There's a CSX track that runs through Murfreesboro. That's probably the closest railroad operation. CSX is mostly it in this area, except for a pleasure train and the Music City Star commuter line.

I have no idea what the employment opportunities are.

Looking at the railroad map available from the Tennessee Department of Transportation web site, it doesn't look like there's a railroad in Cannon County.

As alleycat said, CSX is in Murfreesboro.

There's also a shortline RR east of Cannon County that runs from McMinnville to Tullahoma called Caney Fork & Western Railroad.

Just north of Cannon County is the Nashville & Eastern Railroad shortline which runs from Monterey to Nashville. It's the largest of Tennessee's shortline railroads.

If you're looking at shortlines, try Nashville & Eastern Railroad. It's a 130 mile line that runs between Nashville & Monterey.Home offices are in Lebanon.
Also, one that may be closer to you,is the Caney Fork & Western Railroad, which is a 60 mile line that runs from the CSX interchange at Tullahoma,to Sparta. It's home offices are in McMinnville.
Oh and almost forgot the Walking Horse & Eastern,a little 10 mile line from the CSX to Shelbyville.

There are many others in Tennessee but these are the ones closest to you.
Don't know if they are hiring though...

DM72,

Until the freight increases and the economy picks up, there's not much hope in securing a job at CSX. I was hired last November, completed Conductor Training, and along with 40 others, was laid off on 01/17/09. The projected return date for us in no sooner than August 09, and could be January 2010. We're hoping the new FRA hours of service rules that go into effect in July, and retirement of current employees at Radnor Yard and Bruceton will be enough to get us called back soon. Until all of us are called back, you won't see very much available on csx.com. The jobs currently posted are Engineering, Technical/Mechanical and Professional positions. Apply if you're qualified, but if you seek a craft/union job....you're out of luck. I'm a Conductor with a degree in Engineering and I don't qualify for most of those jobs. Your best bet is to check the web site in about 4 to 6 months. It's a great job if you can hang on to it.

Phil

I am an employee for CSX. I am an Diesel locomotive electrician and advise you to check out the website. I work on the Mechanical side in Nashville at Radnor Yard. If you have a skill trade this is where its at. I have never worked for a better place and thank god everyday for getting me this career. Good luck and wish you the best.
