I had written a post a few days ago about moving to Tennesse. Just another, question. How's the job market for people with a felony in Tennesse (drugs). My sister is considering coming, but really need some input.

A felony is basically an automatic disqualifier for professional work.

There are still job opportunities for people with felonies on their records. They aren't plentiful, and they normally aren't the best jobs, but there are some jobs.

It will be up to your sister to work for the job, and then prove herself at the job. Is she able to join City-Data and make inquiries herself?

Tennessee is not one of those states that have enacted laws that keep employers from accessing your criminal background after a certain number of years so she could have trouble finding work.

If she's clean and the arrest was years ago, I would bring up the drug charge during applications or interviews when applying for jobs that conduct background checks. If she has her life back together and doesn't go near drugs or users, she should be able to present that image and explain that she has turned her life around. Many jobs will respect the honesty and give her a chance if there aren't many strong candidates. I doubt most restaurants and retailers conduct background checks because that would be expensive.
If it's a recent arrest, or she doesn't appear to have her modcut together, all I can say is "good luck".

Just wanted to chime in here and point out that Tennessee has passed (in 2014, started in 2015) a new law establishing a path for ex-felons to obtain a "certificate of employability". This certificate encourages the hiring of ex-felons by shielding employers of litigation if, for example, they hire an ex-felon who then commits a crime on the job.

I stand corrected then

We do background checks and my daughter had to consent to them for the big box stores and grocery stores she interviewed with. Don't know how extensive they are though.

Wow! Thank you all so much. It's been 6 years. Virginia is so hard to make a living in with the scarlet letter. She was only 18 years old when she got charged.
We were looking outside of knoxville but my husband is a auto mechanic and can transfer to any sears auto in TN. We want a small town. So we've been looking at white pine, or greenville. To drive into johnson city. We already commute in va 1.5 hrs one way so the drive shouldn't be to bad. Are those areas okay to raise a family?
