For those that are looking for work in Tennessee, have you ever considered working for the federal government?

I will be retired when I move to Tennessee, and not looking for work nor do I work for OPM, but I just went to the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) website for jobs (it's called USA Jobs) to see what kind of federal job openings there are in Tennessee since a lot of people who post here are looking for work.

There are so many in the Memphis area I am not even going to mention them but here are some jobs that are open right now (you should check every Monday for the refresh) that are not in the Memphis area.

Supervisory Social Worker at VHA in Murfreesboro/Nashville.

Contract Specialist at Health and Human Services in Nashville.

Diagnostic Radiolog Technologist at Veterans Affairs in Chattanooga.

Information Receptionist at Department of Agriculture-Forest Service in Uncoi.

Physicians Assistant at Veterans Affairs in Mountain Home.

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Veterans Affairs in Johnson City.

Federal Security Director at Homeland Security (Transportation) in Nashville.

Park Ranger at National Park Service in Gatlinburg and Townsend.

Operations Research Analyst at the Department of Transportation (FAA) in Nashville.

Transportation Security Officer (screener) in Nashville and Chattanooga

Information Technology Specialist (Security) in Millington with the Navy.

Medical Technologist in Murfreesboro and Nashville with Veterans Affairs.

PPQO (PLANT HEALTH SAFEGUARDING SPECIALIST) in Nashville and throughout Tennessee.

Loan Assistant Specialist throughout TN with Dept of Agriculture.

The salary ranges and job qualifications and benefits are posted with the jobs and like I mentioned, the Memphis area jobs are too numerous to mention. You get an annual cost of living increase and locality pay in some instances. That usually happens every January. You can apply online (before you move). Some of the jobs are open continuos usually because they are not unique jobs and there are enough openings throughout the year that they don't want to post them just for a two-week window of application.

I can tell you that some of the job announcements for the jobs will expire tomorrow but new ones will replace them so keep checking the website if you need work. Also, December and January are a good time to look for Federal Civilian jobs because a lot of feds retire at the end of December.

Here is the website:

http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/ (broken link)

My suggestion is don't select any search term except for the State so you get to see all of the jobs open in that State. There may be some you never thought of that you'd like and are qualified to do.

Default Federal Jobs in Tennessee

I thought some of you might be interested in working for TVA. I think if you already work for the federal government you have transfer rights to TVA.

TVA has everything set-up a bit differently than the rest of the Govt, but benefits and pay rates are very similar.

I'm hearing that they are planning on finishing reactor#2 @ watts bar.

This should be a fairly long project and will generate new jobs for TVA as well as for craft workers. (boilermakers,carpenters,pipe-fitters, etc)

Something to keep an eye on. Some of the more financially skilled workers might be able to grab them a job and put away a little nest egg before retirement.

I can get more info if anyone is interested. Kerry

I did apply for the addiction therapist job in Nashville or Murphysboro, I was disappointed that I was not selected for an interview although I was highly qualified. It took almost two months for a reply but I am disappointed. I think you need to know someone inside the VA to get in. I am still looking for a job in addiction. I would love to work for TVA. I have an MSW and I am a Certified Addiction Therapist in the state of Florida. Got any recommendations. I am thinking about the Psych Hospital in nashville at Vanderbuilt--they have an addiction program. Want a job so I can move out of Florida soon.. I will be coming to Nashville in late September or October...Thanks

Have you tried Cumberland Heights in Nashville? It's a large, major alchohol and drug treatment center (considered one of the top three in the nation).

I see billboards on the Interstate for Bradford Treatment Center; but I don't know anything about them.

Hi,

Sorry you haven't been picked up by the VA, (as a side note TVA has nothing to do with the VA, TVA = Tenn valley Authority)

I applied at and actually got an interview at the JC VA center, but didn't get the job, I wound up taking a job offer out of TN due to inability of finding a job in TN.

Good luck,

Tony

But it is easy to do if you have not decided about where in Tennessee you want to live. And, it's easier to do in some places versus others. If unemployment rate is high in a particular town, it's tougher to get a goverment job in that town because you are competing with more people. If there is a lot of military in the area, it's harder because they have a slight edge when applying for a civilian goverment job. And it's easier to do if you are willing to start in an entry level position (where the jobs are more numerous).

For example, the jobs in Memphis are numerous. If you would be willing to commute to or live in Memphis (and you could even do that from part of Mississippi, too), I think you could find a job with the federal government and you could secure the job before you moved here and/or uproot your family to move here.

But if you have your heart set on moving to Greeneville, for example, yes, it will be tough to find a government job.

To again use Memphis as an example, I just noticed (on the USA Jobs website) that they are establishing rosters for several jobs. That means they have several of those positions opening periodically and they are trying to establish a roster so they don't have to keep announcing the jobs every time one opens. It does not mean they will call you in 2 weeks or 6 weeks or at all. December 31 is a big fed retirement date. It could be they are establishing rosters now in anticipation of losing a lot of people to retirement. But, you could apply now and not be contacted until January or later. Also, Congress failing to pass various appropriations bills (funds government agencies) while they operate under continuing resolutions (after September 30) could mean government agencies have a freeze on hiring right now. I don't know. Since I'm retired I'm out of the loop.

We've got people uprooting their families and coming here without jobs. The appeal about applying for a federal government job is that you can apply for a number of jobs (anywhere in the country) while continuing to work and live where you do now. You don't have to be a local to apply for a federal job and the chances are the guy or woman that is going to hire you isn't a native of the town or state, either.

Hi LauraC,

Interesting info you've collected. You sure spend a LOT of time assembling these messages with links and info, even go so far as create poems and rhythm out of your posts. They are quite nice.

Just curious as to why and how you spend so much time doing these? With all your extensive, carefully thought out and planned posts it almost seems like an full time job.
