Wow. Higher than I anticipated for Tennessee.

It is consistently mentioned though in groups of states that are attractive for retirees. I know of several people myself from Illinois, West Virginia, Connecticut and New York, who are moving to TN for retirement.

The state offers 4 seasons, low cost, no income tax, beautiful geography and tons of things to do. I can see why people are moving here.

Default Why are using year old data?

This list needs an update using the most recent population estimates. Bet Tennessee stays high and Texas goes higher

All three of those choices will be very different and less taxing than NY. Tn is hard to beat though for low taxes, with low property taxes and no income tax, essentially, higher sales tax can not overcome those larger low low taxes. If my wife agrees and we can make a move at age 70, it will be to Tn from Plano Texas

I retire in 4 years and I'm looking very seriously at TN or FL. My sister lives in FL but I love mountains/rolling hills and such and I figure TN is a good compromise from my current tax heavy state of Minnesota.

Taxes are one of my main reasons....I refuse to give the state of MN $450 per month from my retirement check (public pension).

All 3 are excellent options. Tennessee offers no state income tax, and some popular/becoming popular retirement destinations like Crossville, Cookeville, Maryville, Dandridge, and the Tri-Cities region in northeast Tennessee.

SC and NC offer the mountains TN has, but with beach options too. Both have state income tax though, so that might sway your decision.

NY taxes are incredibly high and getting higher it seems, so retiring there does not make great financial sense for sure.

That's a lot--$450/month. I'd definitely move south.

Tennessee and Florida are pretty opposite, but both have zero state income tax. Depends really on access to beaches and year round summer vs access to mountains, a mild winter and 4 seasons.

Yea we have nothing in common with Florida. Florida is a very flat urban state surrounded by water. It has a near tropical climate and has lost its southern culture. Tennessee is a mild four seasons state with 1/4 of the people Florida has, we have mountains and no ocean and we have an intact southern culture. The two choices are really quite different. People need to remember that Florida is unlike any other southern state.

Also worth remembering that it gets cold here. When it’s 45 degrees in January Florida looks a lot better lol.

Florida also has a higher cost of living vs Tennessee.
