We too are planning on the move to Tennessee, before the end of the year.

I've found mostly positive things about it, from being a beautiful state, to the best infrastructure in America, to the cheapest electricity in America.

I wasn't thrilled with no casinos though. Taking the bad with the good there. As for being #3 in crime statistically, I'd take my chances in Roan Mountain, TN over Detroit, MI.

Now a few questions, hoping someone can answer some of them:

#1 I myself don't hunt...not against guns or anything, every room in our home has one somewhere, But I do like eating wild meat, whether it be venison or elk, or fish..any of it. I have the weakest stomach in the cosmos, especially for blood. In Tennessee I couldn't even order a pound of venison online, it's illegal. Would anyone know the thinking behind this? Come hunting season,, would it be legal for me to jump through the hoops and buy deer tags or whatever they require, and have a friend/relative do the hunting, gutting and all?

#2 Each geographical are of the United States has it's own special foods. The Pacific Northwest has Smoked Salmon/Sturgeon & Razor Clams. The Midwest offers Fish Fries, Smoked Chubs & Smelt. Northeast has those nasty garbage plates...and Lobsters. What is Tennessee's famous for? I've tried to Google that, but it's a very broad topic. Any thoughts?

Anything else anyone could offer is welcome. I think I've been vert thorough on looking.

Thank You

1) I would call local butcher shops. Some will butcher an animal a hunter killed and they may be able to point you in the right direction.

2) BBQ (various types), meat and three, Nashville hot chicken.

As I understand it you can be "gifted" wild meat (even though it states no bartering), so if you make a deal with a hunter to buy their tags/licence and he gives you the meat and you keep quite about it you should be ok. I would not think your local wildlife officer cares about that. This law is to reduce the financial incentive for poaching and number taken per individual and because there are no USDA regulations on wild game.

Although TN has no casinos there is a market for casino trips that will take you across state lines. I know a few people who do this. You can find these companies online.

IME TN is know for what some consider as soul food. Pretty much fried everything. Yeah, meat and 3, biscuits and gravy, that type food.

Thank You both on replies.

I've also been told, on the venison anyway, that it makes no difference if the meat is wild or farm raised. You can't buy it. The bartering makes total sense.
I've been trying to find out more also, Say if Bambi were eating my garden...is it legal for us to eat Bambi? I've never gotten a clear answer from TWRA.

I'm not aware of any deer farms in TN. There are hunting "preserves" in my area you can pay to shoot some species of deer, elk, etc. and buffalo farms. I have been given meat by people who work there. Sometimes people who pay for canned hunts dont want the meat.
There are exceptions for nuisance animals but the line gets shady when it comes to shooting deer without a license out of season. You can kill deer on your property without a license during season. There are other ways people can prevent deer from nibbling their garden.

My own personal experience is that during hunting season I generally have co-workers offering to give me venison. I don't care for game so I never take them up on it, but I do think that if you have friends or acquaintances here that hunt you stand a pretty good chance of getting some meat if you let people know you like it.

Ya all Rock. Thank You for the replies, Very helpful.
I joined other forums with the same questions, not a single reply.
Once the move is complete, I'm hoping to get help finding reputable contractors and such, without needing to subscribe to like Angie's List or worry about being scammed through Craig'sList.

Again...Thank You

Meat:
Officially it's illegal to buy/sell/trade meat from any official "game" animal. Unofficially... it isn't exactly a high-priority crime, so just don't put anything in writing.
As for deer eating your garden, it's legal to kill wild animals who are destroying your personal property. Officially, you have to leave the animal where it falls and call TWRA or local officials for disposal. Unofficially... most government agencies would prefer to not spend the money to do that. They'd rather some local volunteer did their job for them. It was a long time ago and a different state, but that is exactly what the local game warden told my dad.

TN Food:
Nashville Hot Chicken, Memphis-Style BBQ, Moon Pies (Chattanooga), Little Debbie (Collegedale/Chattanooga), Jack Daniels TN Whiskey (Lynchburg)
