You dont have to get a carry permit to own a gun in TN, but you can not carry a concealed handgun in public without one. You have to be a resident and will be required to have a background check the cost is $10.00. Handguns also must be registered with the Sheriffs department, I cant remember the cost for that.

That site has a list of states with which Tenessee has a reciprocity agreement. If you have a CC permit from one of those states, you can use it while visiting Tn. But If you become a permanent resident you have to get a Tn CC permit.

If you just want a handgun to keep at home for your protection, you don't need to have a permit or register the firearm at all. If you buy the gun in a private sale you aren't required to submit to a background check, either.

Obviously, if you want to pursue a concealed carry permit, you'll have to submit to all sorts of checks, fees, classes, etc.
