Well, folks on the board are helping us narrow down our choices and it looks like we may look for a home between Nashville and as far east as Cookeville.

So now we start wondering about various utilities and services. What services are available and/or usually found in the towns and out in the more rural areas? DH works from home when he is not flying away and needs to have DSL or high speed internet. He also wants (and I agree) to be able to get NFL TV to watch our New England Patriots during football season.

Do most folks cook with electric or is gas generally available? We don't have gas hook up in our town in NH unless we wanted to run a propane stove.

What about heating systems? Our home runs on two kerosene heaters. We also have two wood stoves and electric baseboard to supplement.

Finally, cell phone vs. land line service?

Thanks for your input.

Joanne

I just got a Tracfone..... It's great if you only use it now and then. The land line just got to expensive.

From Nashville to Cookeville in the cities you should aspect and be able to use the follow companies (only naming bigger ones sorry)

Phone/High Speed Internet:
AT&T - DSL
Comcast - Cable

both AT&T offer phone and internet. Comcast also has cable TV. AT&T I believe has worked with DirecTV to setup digital television in a package deal. With DirecTV you can order the NFL package and you'll get all the games you want.

Gas should be available without many worries. Unless you get into a really rural area I don't forsee you having any issues finding all the amenities you will require.

I'd suggest Verizon too you can get a USB modem for internet (anywhere you have Verizon coverage) for about 50 bucks a month added to your verizon phone bill...or as a stand alone service. Downfall is going to be it's pricer for less speed. Good is your DH (Dear Husband?) can take it with him on trips and as long as he's in the coverage area he can use the internet there too without having to find a hotel with wi-fi.

If you settle in a more rural area cable may not be available and you will have to go with satelite TV. Natural gas may also be unavailable so you will need to have a propane tank. You may also need a land line for internet and in some areas cell reception is very limited.
