Anyone here have any experience camping in the national forests or in any of the WMA areas in east Texas and on down towards Sam Rayburn? I do a lot of camping with my grandchildren in state parks in north and east Texas, but am wanting to expand out to a more " wilderness"/primitive type of camping outside of the driveway slots of the state parks. But some here in Dallas have warned me about getting too far off the beaten path in the areas down around the national forests, and some of them lived there and are from those areas. Anyone with camping experience know if there are any worries camping off the beaten path in the national forests or more or less unregulated WMA areas in that part of the state? From comments I gathered the main worries for them were the KKK types and the meth heads , when you get out away from some authority figures like the state parks afford.

Thanks.

Eagle Scout here. I have camped out all in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

Big Thicket is a great place to camp, in Southwest Louisiana Sam Houston Jones SP is a great place to camp. Beware of the alligators though

I never had any problems but I was always with a group. You'd be fine in SHJ but maybe not in Big Thicket if you weren't in a group.

Another great place is Kisatchie National Forest.
