On a seprarate note (since you mentioned Eldorado), f I'm not mistaken doesn't the city of Eldorado, Texas pronounce it "el-do-RAY-doh," as opposed to "el-do-RAH-doh"?

Yes.

Pretty close (NO) to what I've always heard.

Have you noticed area news/weatherscasters in Midland-Odessa saying "ColoRAYdo City?" I don't remember ever hearing that except from people who were my grandparents' age!

That's the only way I've EVER heard it pronounced...now you've got me wondering how your wife could be pronouncing it. LOL.

I don't watch the local news, so I am not really sure how the local news people say it, but I did see a report a couple of years ago on the national news (CNN I think) that actually did pronounce the name as coloRAYdo.

Wahcahmoley. She says it's the proper way and I say it's a New Mexican thing.

Default Another one -- Arkansas River

I am wondering about this one:

My ex (kids' mother) was originally from Kansas, and first time I went up there with her to visit her folks, I saw one of those small green signs -- before crossing a bridge -- which read: Arkansas River

I commented on it, and y'all can probably guess the rest. I pronounced it "AR-kin-saw" river. And she made it clear that, up there, it was "ar-Kansas" river.

I argued the point and it kept going until we arrived at her family gathering and it spilled over from there. Here is me against a dozen Kansans and I am trying to stand my ground, yet excercise good Texas/Southern tactful manners in explaining to them how I was right and they were simply mistaken... but thru no real fault of their own. Ain't that fair, y'all?

Welll, I am exagerating a bit as to any animosity involved, because there wasn't any. It actually lead to a good discussion over regional pronunciations of pronouns, and idiom and inflections and such.
