Hi everybody, I drive on the highway a lot. I go the speed limit. Will you get pulled over and get a ticket for going 73-74 in a 70? My dad used to tell me that cops normally give you 5 over.I know they can definatley pull over for goin 73-74 but how likely is that? Thanks in advance.

Westerntraveler: It isn't likely, but there are no guarantees.

I stay with the flow of the traffic. A state trooper will seldom pull a motorist out of traffic to ticket them for a few miles over the limit and I'd say almost never if all the traffic is running 5-10 mies over the limit. They'll sure target you if you are flying by everyone though!

I had a state trooper tell me one time that they felt it was far more dangerous to pull someone over for going a few miles over the limit, especially when everyone was running about the same speed than it was to let them just keep the even sensible flow going.

Just remember, that philosophy won't apply to a speed demon.

But another factor to take under consideration is that saying...there's one in every crowd.... so, it might just be at the time you are going 4 miles over, that particular 'one' happens to be the one holding the radar gun. It sure would take a big blankety-blank 'one of those' to ticket someone for 4-5 mile over the limit, but there's always the chance. So, if you're exceeding the speed limit you're breaking the law and as such taking a risk. It all comes back to you and what you feel comfortable with.

If the traffic flow on an interstate is going 80, I'll go 80.

If I am the only one on the road or traffic is very light, I'll probably drive no more than 5 MPH over the speed limit, assume road conditions are good. Driving in Texas since 1975, I have never been ticketed for 74 in a 70.

You can get stopped for 1 mph if the officer so desires. Will you get a ticket for it? Not likely, but it can be a reason to stop someone.

I've been stopped once a year for about the last 4 years, all by DPS Troopers, all on 70 mph highways, for 76 and under.

My most recent stop was last fall. My cruise was set on 72 according to my GPS. I lose about 1 mph uphill and gain about 1 mph downhill. I was on the downside of a hill doing 73 and got stopped by a Trooper. I already knew I wasn't going to get a ticket, but he walks up to my window, "You in a hurry today?" I'm thinking, "Really? You think 3 mph is a hurry? You've obviously never seen me in an actual hurry." He checks my insurance, runs my license and sends me on my way with a warning. He was polite and all, but a stop for 3 mph over is a bit petty if you ask me.

So, will you get stopped for 3-4 over? Not usually, but it can happen.

I've seen cars pulled out of the flow of traffic that's going, say, 10 mph over the limit several times. I figure it's the cop's way of reminding everyone to slow down - when they see that, they certainly do! Especially as most folks who drive the routes I take know that if there's one there, chances are good another one's just a little ways up ahead.

Yes, but it's not likely. Very rare. I know in a Defensive Driving course I took; we had to introduce ourselves and state why we were there and I remember 1 girl stated she got pulled over for going 1 mile over and another for going 4 over.
