Ive noticed in Texas (especially coming from California) that Asians are highly urban and suburban here relative to most places on the west coast and northeast. Its a topic that interests me and its a slow day at work, so I decided to pull some numbers. I only pulled numbers for people who identified as fully Asian.

As of 2010, there are 955,531 Asians in the state of Texas. Thats 3.8% of the total population. Even though Texas has the 3rd highest Asian population in the US, in concentration its 1% below the national average:

Texas QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Here is a breakdown by metro area:

Greater Houston has 389,007 Asians. That's 40.7% of the states total Asian population. They are 6.5% of the metro area.

The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex has 341,503 Asians. That's 35.7% of the states total Asian population. They are 5.4% of the metro area.

The Austin metro area has 82,433 Asians. That's 8.6% of the states total Asian population. They compose 4.8% of the metro area.

The San Antonio metro area has 45,330 Asians. That's 4.7% of the states total Asian population. They are 2.1% of the metro area.

When put together, this means 89.7% of all the Asians in the state live in the major metro areas.

Enjoy!

Asian is such a broad term. Even Indians are considered "Asians".

Each Texas city is known for having more of a specific group than another.

For example:

Dallas/Fort Worth: Koreans, Laos, & Thai

Greater Houston: Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipinos, & Indonesians

Both Houston & Dallas have sizable Asian Indian populations though I think Houston may have more.

Austin is pretty much strictly Chinese & Vietnamese.

San Antonio isn't really known for having many Asians at all, but I'd suspect what little is there would be mostly Vietnamese, Chinese, & Filipino.

True dat. Asians really cover a broad range.

For Indians, DFW passed Houston over the last decade. Per the 2010 census numbers:

DFW: 100,386 (1.6% of the population)
Houston: 91,367 (1.5% of the population)

Indian American - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Both, however have Indian populations that are quite large and amenities for them to boot.

The largest single Asian group in San Antonio is actually Filipino. That may have something to do with the military. Yet, its still quite small (around 10,000).

Austin, if I recall has a decent sized Korean population for a city its size. Its not as big as Dallas or Houston, but I think there are around 11,000 Koreans there.

I work in the airline industry, so Im going to throw out a bonus. Below are the top five city pairs from Texas to Asia per air traffic. The numbers are passengers per direction per day (PDEW):

Top five city pairs from Texas to Asia (not including India or Middle East):

1) DFW-Seoul: 89 passengers per day
2) Houston-Beijing: 76 passengers per day
3) Houston-Shanghai-69 passengers per day
4) DFW-Tokyo-67 passengers per day
5) Houston-Tokyo-57 passengers per day

Houston-Manilla/Singapore/Seoul and DFW-Hong Kong/Shanghai make out the top ten

Top five city pairs from Texas to India and Pakistan:

1) DFW-Delhi: 112 passengers per day
2) Houston-Mumbai: 107 passengers per day
3) DFW-Mumbai: 104 passengers per day
4) Houston-Delhi: 87 passengers per day
5) DFW-Bangalore: 67 passengers per day

Enjoy.

Probably that plus San Antonio is a majority Catholic town & has the Spanish influence. Filipino's are like the Mexicans of Asians. There is also lots of medical stuff going on down there which is the field Filipinos gravitate to.
