Houston proper (don't have much experience w/the burbs) is perhaps the most integrated and diverse areas I have ever seen in my life. It's quite remarkable. I'd say it is second only to NYC in that aspect (in America)... and similar regarding racism. Practically, very little (everyone has to live together, after all). But certainly some. Nothing like what the OP described about Atlanta, though.

DFW has a huge amount of sprawl, like Atlanta, so people pretty much live around the neighbors they want. Only recently have central neighborhoods regained desirability among new residents, improving the diversity. Never detected the attitudes or reverse racism described by the OP here, either.

Here in Austin, not much diversity. Lots of liberal minds and voters, but living in a very segregated climate. Basically white-collar whites and blue-collar hispanics, and that's it.

It has been my experience that New Yorkers and people from Boston who move to Texas tend to move back after a few years. They don't generally fit in.

Houston share similar values to NYC or Chicago. It is a city of hard workers and very gritty.
I've seen that zoom. While Atlanta looks like a bunch of spaghetti thrown all around the place. Dallas holds it's own when it comes to a gridded system. And yes, I know that area you are talking about in Chicago. I lived up there.

Candis,

I feel your pain. I relocated from NY to Atl and I absolutely hate it. I am looking to relocate to the Texas area, either Austin or San Antonio. What did you decide and how has your experience been.
