We have 3 elementary-aged boys and are considering moving to New Braunfels, Texas from Indiana. Would appreciate any advice on what to expect and what neighborhoods may be worth checking into for location close to shopping and restaurants and (more importantly) good schools. Just need to sell the house and snowblower, then we are heading south!

I'll just say "Welcome to Texas"! I know very little of the area . I do have a childhood friend who is in administration in the Blanco area.

Its a nice little town. I visited it back in 2003 and really liked it. I believe New Braunfels was settled by Germans during the 1840s.

New Braunfels is a nice area. Homes in the nicer areas run from about 150K to 400K depending on how zooty you want to live. Schools are pretty good and restaurants are everywhere. Do you have employment lined up? How did you pick NB?

Even though the whole area is in drought now, I'd make sure any place you choose is well out of the flood plain. That is number one priority, IMHO.

I agree with Lee W. 100%. Especially since we have been in a drought; the land will not soak up the water as easily (initially) if a really hard rain were to fall, causing an easy recipe for a Flash Flood. If possible, look for a place up on a bluff or a hill, and a place that has a decent drainage system.

Most areas of new Braunfels would not flood under any circumstances. Just like any other area, avoid low lying properties near the rivers and creeks. I would not let that influence you.

Just understand that if it looks like rain to the north or west then you need to exercise caution...

That may be true, but if you buy a property in a floodplain...and you have a mortgage on it, lenders are going to require flood insurance.

That's in addition to the standard homeowner's policy. It can bite you when resale time comes, too.
