Oh and just to clarify, I wouldn't support this, but when faced with two choices... I'd take the one that let me remain an American as opposed to seceding.

Texas CANNOT legally divide itself into 5 states
That mantra is just wishful thinking and the rationalization for people who have lost a grip on reality...
IF Texas were ever to try that the part along the border would be so consumed by Mexican drug lords, it would be colonized in two weeks...

The idea that dividing TX into separate states would be economically viable is as smart as people who deny climate change is happening...
and who could STAND 5 state legislatures with the same type of people in there now...
that in itself is the perfect example for why this is a moronic idea...
"a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing..."

That map is horrible and makes no sense. No. I'd say cut the state in half west of Austin.

Texas joined the Union prior to Civil War under an agreement allowing that possibility but when Texas seceeded during the Civil War and joined the Confederacy and then suffered a sound defeat...that voided ALL contracts like the original agreement...
Texas was CONQUERED by the USA and taken into the Union again under the US rules/regs--no future sucession is "allowed"....if it tried then that is act of treason/aggression and would not happen peacefully...

people who advocate these off-the-wall suppositions are just oblivious to the consequences...
and in all likelihood would run away before suffering any of them...

Texas is the world's 13th largest GDP. I think we could survive on our own just fine.

Not even New York beats Texas.

I can't believe there are Texans who'd actually want to secede from the nation....

5 different states????
not all of them have such a large GDP--
and knowing some Texans like I do, I can certainly believe that the one areas that are the most successful would view smaller/less successful areas as drags to their success and would seek to cut them off and set them adrift...like a 3rd world country surrounded by more successful ones...

The original agreements are not technically void (the U.S. never recognized the confederacy as a separate entity); however, the 13th amendment pretty much requires approval of the legislature on top of the existing agreements.
