Hey everyone!! I'm writing from a New Orleans suburb, River Ridge. My son just got word from his job that he's being transferred/promoted to Victoria, Texas. No offense, but I had never heard of Victoria until Saturday. My son has to start this coming Thursday - yikes!! - he's 22 years old. Please share any information that's helpful to know. I'm very proud of the oppostunity but also a little nervous. Thanks, Ana

Victoria is somewhat of a backwater, but there are advantages to that as well as negatives. I assume that he is working in the chemical plants? There is good money to be made for a low cost of living, but if you are used to the big city, it can be a bit of a shock. In addition, the 'chemical' towns (such as Texas City, Freeport/Lake Jackson, and Victoria) are tough on single young men. There tends to be a lot more men who come in to work the plants, such as pipe-fitters, welders, and operators, and it can be tough to find a date :-).

On the other hand, if you already have a family, it can be a nice slower paced place to raise kids.

LOL Victoria has plenty of women. I live about an hr away in Rockport. With a county population of approximately 100,000 and growing even those poor chemical guys can find a date. Rockport actually has more men than women and its really an attractive town on the water. The reason is more men than women are into boating etc. Port Lavaca is nearby and it has some waterfront- not too bad a place.

Default Peaceful in Victoria

Victoria is a much better "chemical plant" town to be in from a mom's point of view because Pasadena, Texas City area are so close to Houston and there is just way too much fun in Houston for a young guy.

If your son likes fishing and hunting he should really enjoy Victoria. One of my best friends from high school is an engineer for Union Carbide. He is very pleased to be in Victoria.

It's still close enough to LA to come home....
