Just curious, which of these two cities has a more politically conservative bent and culture overall?

I'd go with Dallas, but not by that much

It's a stretch to say one is more conservative than the other. They're the same.

It's pretty appropriate that they're tied in this poll too.

I went with Houston, but there's almost no daylight between the two when it comes to politics (they're solid purple these days, trending towards blue).

If you are just talking about cities then I would say neither city are conservative in voting patterns. You need to keep in mind that inner cities tend to vote for the blue not because they are a progressive area with liberals but they vote for democrats based off of income.

If you add up all the votes for both metros you will see that they are both still very red in nature.

Houston Metro 2012 vote totals:

Obama 809,464
Romney 1,025,464

I'm not sure how that comes out to solid purple.

I'd say they're about the same. But based on Dallas's more ambitious projects, i'd say that Dallas has slightly more vision.

Politically, both Dallas & Houston are moderate to slightly left leaning.

Socially, Houston is more tolerant than Dallas albeit not by a lot. It is a noticeable difference though.

If you look at a map of the Bible Belt, Dallas is at the heart of the Bible Belt in Texas while Houston is right at the edge.
