As I have posted on the Mississippi and Tennessee forums, I am looking to go to further my education outside of Arizona.

I have considered UT and Texas A&M, would anybody recommend anywhere else?

A lot would depend on your field of study. Care to share?

History. I'm considering a future in teaching.

Hmmm...not to be snide, but get the cheapest one, wherever that might be. Don't know costs, but maybe Texas State or Texas Tech? Both have grad programs in history. Also University of North Texas, UTEP, or UTSA.

If you're getting your master's in education, the UT College of Education is one of the top rated schools in the country. Much higher rated then A&M.

Exactly! Unless you are planning a career where your alma mater would make a difference (very few of those), just get the cheapest one. Believe me--a few years down the road--NOBODY will care where you obtained your credential. It will only matter that you have it.

Add Sam Houston & Stephen F to the list. Along with the above, both are known for churning out fine teachers for decades.

1) Pick an area of history that you are interested in.

2) Find the top scholars who study that area

3) Find schools among those top scholars that you can get into, afford etc.

4) Go to a school with one of these top scholars as your mentor.

A generic masters in history is not going to get you anywhere,

Will you teach history in HS or College?

What area of history are you interested in?

Is your focus Liberal or Free Market?

I would go to a smaller college with a small department where you can be an individual and whose instructors share your world view. They will then help you move on to a career after you graduate.

It typically costs a lot less to get a college education in the state where you have residency. That is important if you are going into a field such as teaching that doesn't pay all that much.
