How often do you guys commute between these cities? Would you party in Austin one weekend, go to a bar in Dallas on another weekend, enjoy a share in san antonio the next and dine in Houston?

The cities seem only 3 hrs apart. Do the people of these cities interact alot?

We interact on the City Data forum enjoying daily analysis of who has the best shopping, tallest high rises and best food between Dallas and Houston. The rest of us Texans in towns like El Paso, San Antonio, Waco, Austin and the like are irrelevant because we fail to answer the questions of the day: who has the tallest high rise, who fornicated in a pickup truck, or who has the best turn signals in Dallas or Houston.

Sorry for the sarcasm but this Dallas versus Houston thing is nothing more than a who can smear the most whipped cream on a cat turd and make it taste like the best BBQ or the best chili-cheeseburger contest.

Not really, each city is pretty self contained. As a San Antonian, I don't go to Austin, it's a smaller town and has less of the things I enjoy. I go to Dallas or Houston to visit friends that I have in each of those cities, but it's maybe a twice a year thing. Frankly a lot more people visit San Antonio and spend time at our resorts, golf courses and the riverwalk than the other cities receive in intrastate visitors. I think more people from all of the major metro areas spend time in the hill country though.

In my 'youth', I traveled between Houston, SA, and Austin frequently (as well as New Orleans, College Station, and Port A, among other places). Had friends in most all of them and did not have much of anything tying me down. I still live in Austin, but now days, with a family and more responsibilities, I travel much less for social interaction. SA I get to once or twice a year for a conference, and we have an office in Houston, as well, so I am there at least once or twice a year. Otherwise, it is only family destinations - sister in Boerne, folks in Fredericksburg. If you do have friends in one of the other metros, yes, it is easy, and I suppose somewhat common, to travel/interact face-to-face; however, it isn't like there isn't a few million people in pretty much any of the major cities.

From San Antonio here...

I go to Austin maybe three times a year, Dallas once a year, and Houston 10 times a year.

I think people from Houston, Austin, and San Antonio may interact more since they are bunched closer together. I know there are huge economic ties between Dallas and Houston, but I dont think that people from one just go to the other for the heck of it. Outside of work related reasons, I dont know that Houston and Dallas interact all that much.

I think Dallas and DFW are much more an island unto themselves.

I've been to Austin a couple of times. My goal is to go up there more often for the type of music events we lack in SA.

I'm in DFW. I go to Dallas maybe once a month, and I can count the times I've been to the rest on my fingers. Anecdotally, most of the people I know are pretty much the same, and reinforcing peterlemonjello's hypothesis.
