Victoria, TX? (San Antonio, Canyon, Cactus: apartment complex, renting, crime)

Hi, everyone.

I might be moving to Victoria if I get the job I applied for.

I searched and found another thread on the city, but its questions mostly concerned things I already knew about (weather) or that weren't relevant to me (schools).

I'm a 22 year-old female college grad from San Antonio. I generally prefer living in major cities, but I'm going where the work is, I suppose.

Anyhow, can someone please let me know about the different parts of town? Which parts are generally safer, which part of town you would want to live, etc.? Also, where can I find younger people my age? I don't really know anyone in Victoria, and would do well to know the hot spots to meet people.

I grew up in Victoria all the way up until I was 20 (I'm 22 too). I now live in San Antonio, and am going to school here. I know Victoria very well, and could ya a little advice. I loved growing up there, but I sure would never move back. I'm sure you might have more detailed questions after I make my post, but here's some to start off:

-Victoria is a small city (65,000)
-What career is it you're hoping to land there?
-The crime I believe has been rising the past few years. I think it's because of the lack of police officers. There seems to be more shootings than there should be for a city that size.
-I didn't realize until I moved out, but when I went back I noticed that Victoria was more ghetto than the places I moved to (san marcos, now san antonio)

i'm sorry to say, but you won't find many people your age. Many people that age are married, or are in the workforce. You won't find places with a lot of young college kids, or young 20-25 yr olds for that matter. Maybe high school kids, def no college vibe there. The only place I can think of bar/club wise that attract a lot of folks there is Cactus Canyon (I myself would never go there). I think another place called Ernies opened up. Cactus Canyon is for the older crowd.

There's a mall, a few other places to shop, but after a while you'll be trying to find something to do on many nights.

Growing up, it was fun, but if I were you, I'd think twice about moving there. Not to mention the humidity is a killer.

Oh, and areas to live-Will you going to be renting or getting a House?

I might be working in the media industry. I'd be renting an apartment. I asked around and was told the more north the better. A bunch of people at the place I interviewed at say they live at an apartment complex called the Whitman or Whitmore or something like that.

I suppose as far as making friends goes I'll have to make friends with coworkers...only one there was my age but I had a great casual conversation with some of the staff.

I lived in Victoria, Tx and recently moved back to the valley. I love Victoria, Tx and miss all the friends I met there. I recommend Cactus Canyon as a place to go out to and meet people. It is on Navarro Street.

As a Texas peace officer, Victoria is expanding its force, as it is one reason I am considering the city, I can do a lateral transfer. So they are trying to take care of the crime in the city, or so it would seem to me. San Antonio is also a humid place.. I am guessing your saying that Victoria is far more humid than that.. wow, then that is pretty extreme. I am in my forties and married so I don't care about the single scene, or college kids, as a matter of fact I would rather avoid that. I am no where near liberal so Victoria is sounding better and better all the time. As a peace officer I tend to spend more time at home with the wife and kids and less hob nobbing out and about. What many here have posted as negatives sound pretty damn positive to me.
