We are searching for a retirement location in Texas, and lately we've been looking closer to the coast or possibly the Tyler area. I've run into a cost consideration that I need to factor in, and that is property taxes. Our high property tax rates make Texas not the greatest retirement choice out there, as some cities have tax rates that make even a small affordable house a big pill to swallow, especially when you're not retiring with a big bucks pension. So, my question is, are there any places the forum members can recommend that are nice places to live, without the high property taxes?

We are pretty open to suggestions, except for the far western part of the state and the panhandle.

That site can be very deceiving as well. In Travis County, taxes can range from 1.6% and on up to about 3.1%. Yes, they're using a "Median", but there's still a big difference just when you're looking at county breakdown.

Perhaps that's a good site to get an idea of the relative tax situation per county, but...once you focus on one county, it seems one needs to look specifically at the details (school district, etc). I just used that web site for my county in New Mexico. It told me that a $300k house in my county would have a tax of about 2200. The actual tax for a $300k house in my specific neighborhood is about $4300.

Its a tool, just like other web sites. When I want to know the actual taxes on property in a particular town/city, I go to Realtor.com. On their listings they usually list the property taxes for their listings. That's very helpful. I figure the web site is still useful. If the median taxes are high high high, then its time to be very careful.

augiedogie...that's good if you can do that. I wasn't aware realtor.com had that available. I think another good option is to go to the county tax assessor page on the web and enter the address of a property you might be interested in. I think most counties have that available and you can look at the tax bills for past years as well to see trends...etc.
