I'm from Austin and it has gained most of the typical big-city problems and none of the big-city positives outside of the improved restaurants/food scene.

AGREE! And I hate to admit it, too.

If I absolutely had-to pick any city to live in, in Texas, I'd pick Llano. It's nowhere-near Austin or San Antonio, but not so far away that you can't get there in an hour.
Of course, once you're there (especially in Austin), you have to wait in traffic for another hour, just to get through town.

Llano is out in the Hill Country, is small enough that folks raised there tend to stay there, and the center of town has a lot of charm. It's a little like Georgetown, without all the development along the highway.

My favorite used to be Austin, where I have lived for 40 years, mainly the natural beauty of west Austin. But overall, it has become a very poorly maintained and unattractive city (e.g., weed overgrowth, litter and graffiti). Both Houston and Dallas are far ahead of Austin in things that matter to me most. They also have become nearly as progressive as Austin regarding cultural values, but are far more culturally diverse.

Dallas and Houston have both made great strides in cleaning up. The highrise architecture all over those cities is beautiful. New roads and expressways seem to be built at breakneck speed compared with Austin. Cultural opportunities are numerous. I'm looking forward to retiring and moving to one of those two cities.
